Miss Vilella’s Math 7/8 Class

Class Expectations

  • Come to class on time and prepared. Students are to be in their seats and ready to start when the bell rings. Students will bring a pencil to class. NO PENS! If you need to borrow a pencil, you must trade me (phone, ipod, etc.) for the duration of time the pencil is borrowed. Items will be traded back when my pencil is returned.

  • Respect others and yourself. This means listening when others are speaking, raising your hands to talk, keeping your hands to yourself, and not touching others’ belongings.

  • Have a positive attitude! Be positive and try your hardest. In this class, we will learn from our mistakes and help our classmates. Attitude is everything. If you think you can, you can!

  • Follow all rules in the Code of Conduct.

  • Use devices appropriately. At times, I allow students to use their own devices to listen to music or play math games. In order to acquire this privilege, students must bring in a signed BYOD contract.

Homework

You can expect to have homework almost every night. All assignments are due at the beginning of period. All problems must be attempted to receive full credit (5 points) and work must be shown. Homework must be done in pencil or no credit will be given for that assignment. Absent students must make up missing assignments. No late homework will be accepted unless you are using a homework pass.

Projects

Projects may be assigned throughout the year and in place of an exam.  Projects may be worth up to one test grade (100 points).

Tests and Quizzes

Generally, there will be a quiz or a test following every unit. Tests are worth 100 points, and quizzes range from 20-60 points.

Participation

Students are expected to participate in lessons and take responsibility for their learning.

Daily problems, homework, quizzes, and test scores will make up the grade, which is based on total points earned.  Conduct grades will be a reflection of a student’s ability to abide by classroom and school rules.

Passes

Each quarter, students will receive 3 Homework Passes.  The homework pass may be attached to a completed, late assignment to receive full credit for the late work.   If you have no zero’s for homework grades, any unused passes may be turned in at the end of the quarter for extra credit!  Homework Passes are for late homework assignments only;  they may NOT be used for Daily Problem Worksheets or Projects.

Grading Scale

Numeric grades will be given for all assignments, however, in accordance with KGMS policy, the letter grade equivalents are listed below:

90-100     A

80-89       B

70-79       C

60-69       D

59 and below  F

Extra Practice Materials will be available to students throughout the school year. Along the back wall of the classroom, students can find practice assignments on topics they may be struggling with. These extra assignments are completely optional. Students can decide what topics they need extra practice with, complete the assignments on their own time, ask any questions on the material, and turn in once it is completed. Students may turn these extra assignments in for up to 20 extra credit points each quarter.  I will only accept assignments if each problem is completed, with work shown, and done in pencil.

PARENT PORTAL is the best way to check your students’ progress. On parent portal, you can check the grade but also which assignments are missing and need to be made up.

MY WEBSITE will provide you with information that I update weekly. You can find dates for upcoming quizzes, information about homework and what topics we are working on, or general reminders. Also, you can find links to outside resources that may be helpful to your student. You can access my website through the school website. Go to the staff page and click on my name.
